Loadouts: what to bring into DMZ: Recon
Loadout fundamentals, three squad archetypes and a class-by-class weapon shortlist for Serpent Island, Building 21 and Rebirth Island.
The non-negotiables
A loadout that can actually extract has five things before it has a “meta gun”:
- A primary you can control at 30 m and 5 m. DMZ: Recon mixes Serpent Island rooftops with Building 21 hallways. Pick a gun with a usable iron-sight or a 1x optic.
- Armor plus spare plates. Three plates in the vest and at least three in the bag. AI hits harder than players expect.
- Ammo for both guns. Ammo boxes are rarer than guns. Carry the same caliber on both weapons where you can.
- A backpack upgrade. Medium at minimum. Key cards, contract items and a second armor plate carrier all eat slots.
- Safe slot discipline. Anything you cannot afford to lose (key cards, high-tier attachments, contract rewards) goes in the safe slot the moment you pick it up. Dying strips everything else.
Insured and contraband weapons work like the original DMZ: you can die with a contraband gun and lose it, so run your best Gunsmith build only when the squad is committing to an exfil plan.
Three squad archetypes
Every three-player squad should cover these roles. Swap who plays which per match, but never drop one.
Anchor (AR + Marksman/Sniper)
Holds angles, calls rotations, carries the self-revive. AR: Kilo 141, Krig 6, ISO Hemlock, Grau 5.56 for range; Type 25 or AK-47 if you want punch over control. Long gun: DL Q33 or Locus for one-tap potential, SKS/SVD style marksman rifles if the squad plays mid-range.
Entry (SMG + Shotgun)
First into rooms, first onto roofs. SMG: QQ9, MX9, Fennec, Static-HV for raw close-range speed; PP19 Bizon for ammo economy. Shotgun: KRM-262 or R9-0 for Building 21 hallways. Carry a flash and a stun; smoke is the Anchor’s job.
Support (LMG or AR + Launcher)
Suppresses AI, deals with vehicles and bosses. LMG: Holger 26, Chopper, UL736. Launcher: FHJ-18 for vehicles and the aerial support that shows up with Nikto on Rebirth Island. Support carries the squad’s spare plates and the extra ammo box.
Attachments that matter in DMZ: Recon
- Suppressor on everything. AI aggro and third-party squads both key off gunfire.
- Extended mags over fire-rate boosts: AI spawns in waves.
- Laser for hip-fire if you run an SMG; most Building 21 fights happen before you finish ADS.
- Stock / grip for ADS speed on ARs. Range attachments are a Serpent Island luxury.
Per-map adjustments
| Map | Primary bias | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Serpent Island | AR + Sniper | Long rotations, rooftop fights, offshore ship exfil. |
| Building 21 | SMG + Shotgun | Three indoor floors, constant corners, highest AI density. |
| Rebirth Island | AR + SMG | Medium ranges outside the Prison, close inside it. Bring a launcher for Nikto’s air support. |
Weapon shortlist by class
Community picks as of Season 9 (Vampires vs Werewolves). Balance patches shift these; the newest Battle Pass weapons (Grav Rifle, Static-HV, ISO Hemlock) are strong on release and usually get tuned a season later.
- Assault rifles: Kilo 141, Krig 6, ISO Hemlock, Grau 5.56, AK-47, Type 25, RAM-7
- SMGs: QQ9, MX9, Fennec, Static-HV, PP19 Bizon, RUS-79U
- Shotguns: KRM-262, R9-0, JAK-12 (ammo hungry)
- LMGs: Holger 26, Chopper, UL736
- Snipers / Marksman: DL Q33, Locus, ZRG 20mm (slow, hits through plates)
- Launcher: FHJ-18
If you only build one gun for DMZ: Recon, build a suppressed Kilo 141 or Krig 6 with a 1x optic, extended mag and a stock for ADS speed. It is never the wrong answer.
